Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Image
OT Lesson: Psalm 38:17-22 (TLB) How constantly I find myself upon the verge of sin; this source of sorrow always stares me in the face. I confess my sins; I am sorry for what I have done. But my enemies persecute with vigour and continue to hate me— though I have done nothing against them to deserve it. They repay me evil for good and hate me for standing for the right. Don’t leave me, Lord;  don’t go away! Come quickly!  Help me, O my Saviour. NT Lesson: Matthew 5:4 (NRSV) Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Sermon Introduction Good morning. Some of you, I saw last week at the worship in the park. Others, I haven’t seen you for two weeks. So how have you been for the last two weeks?  The worship service in the park was lovely, with the clouds providing a gentle cover from the sun throughout.  We had a special visitor last Sunday: Karen Korteling, the granddaughter of Rev. Arthur Korteling, after whom our fellowship hall is named...

Blessed Are the Poor

Image
OT Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:13-16 (CEB) A poor but wise youth is better than an old and foolish king, who no longer listens to advice. He emerged from prison to become king, even though during his rule a poor child is born. I saw all who live and walk under the sun following the next youth who would rise to take his place. There was no counting the number of people he ruled, but those who came later aren’t happy with him. This too is vanity and a chasing after wind. NT Reading: Matthew 5:3 (NRSV) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Sermon Introduction Good morning. Last Sunday was Father’s Day—fathers, did you have a good Father’s Day? After the worship service last Sunday, my wife wanted to go to the water park in Lafayette. I, on the other hand, wanted to relax at home on Father’s Day. But she responded, “It doesn’t matter what you want on Father’s Day. We’re going to the water park.” So, we went, and despite applying sunscreen, I still got ...

How to Worship According to Jesus

OT Lesson: 2 Chronicles 29:25-30 (CEB) Hezekiah had the Levites stand in the Lord’s temple with cymbals, harps, and zithers, just as the Lord had ordered through David, the king’s seer Gad, and the prophet Nathan. While the Levites took their places holding David’s instruments, and the priests their trumpets, Hezekiah ordered the entirely burned offering to be offered up on the altar. As they began to offer the entirely burned offering, the Lord’s song also began, accompanied by the trumpets and the other instruments of Israel’s King David. The whole congregation worshipped with singing choirs and blaring trumpets until the end of the entirely burned offering. After the entirely burned offering was complete, the king and all who were with him bowed down in worship. Then King Hezekiah and the leaders ordered the Levites to praise the Lord by using the words of David and the seer Asaph. They did so joyously; then they bowed down in worship too. NT Lesson: Matthew 5:1-2 (NRSV) When Je...
